Dr. Reverend Andrea Zaki:
Today, we present practical coordination and joint cooperation model between state institutions and civil society organizations.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad
All monotheistic religions urged the preservation of God's blessings on earth.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad, Minister of Environment, and Reverend Dr. Andrea Zaki Estefanos, Head of the Coptic Evangelical Organization for Social Services, signed a cooperation protocol. The collaboration protocol aims to strengthen the bonds of cooperation and coordination between them to spread environmental awareness among individuals on all environmental issues, especially the issue of climate change, at the level of the governorates of the Republic. This event occurred in the presence of several leaders concerned with the Ministry and the Organization.
Dr. Yasmine Fouad confirmed that the protocol comes within the framework of the Ministry's keenness to enhance and support the role of civil society organizations in facing the effects of climate change. This role will be activated by preserving natural resources and improving the environmental behavior of society by spreading environmental awareness among individuals and institutions.
The Minister indicated that the positive daily habits we carry out as individuals positively affect the harmful effects of climate change. She also stressed that all heavenly religions had urged the preservation of God's blessings on earth, including plants, animals, wild creatures, and others. She stressed the need to teach this to our children.
Hence comes the cooperation with the authority to raise awareness and promote youth participation to change negative habits for a decent life for us and future generations.
The Minister of Environment also indicated that the recently launched National Climate Dialogue aims to raise awareness and enhance the participation of various groups, including youth, politicians, religious figures, women, and civil society, in facing the challenge of climate change.
Upon the political leadership's directives, the Minister of Environment called on everyone to participate in the upcoming COP27 climate conference, to implement effective practical activities and interventions to confront the effects of climate change.
Fouad explained that the cooperation between the two parties is carried out through the implementation of awareness campaigns on environmental issues and local initiatives that support the capabilities of citizens most affected by the damage caused by climate change to adapt to it. Also, to implement educational activities and visual and audio awareness materials on environmental issues.
In addition to that comes the cooperation in raising citizens' environmental awareness, preserving natural resources and ecosystems in the work areas of the Organization through its activities included in the plan, and implementing celebrations of ecological events throughout the year.
In addition to the above, environmental competition with children and youth, working to empower local communities and build resilience, flexibility, and ability to adapt to climate change and mitigate the adverse effects of climate change within the Organization's work communities will take place.
For his part, Rev. Dr. Andrea Zaki praised the significant role played by the Minister of Environment and the work team since assuming the responsibility of leading the Ministry of Environment and its insistence on leading change and development in the environment sector in Egypt.
Such intensive efforts started with the issuance of the waste management law and the development and implementation of a national strategy for waste management; issuing the first green government bonds, integrating the dimensions of environmental sustainability in national investment plans, and supporting the construction of waste management infrastructure, until the launch of the National Strategy for Climate Change in Egypt 2050 last May.
Rev. Dr. Andrea continued by saying that the signing of the protocol confirms the statement of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi, President of the Republic, that the year 2022 will be the year of civil society organizations, through which we present a practical model for coordination and joint cooperation between state institutions and civil society organizations in the field of sustainable development, and to provide more support for the implementation of the activities of the presidential initiative, "Get ready for the green."
Dr. Andrea also indicated that cooperation is taking place with research institutions, experts, and specialists in developing both agricultural and environmental development programs to implement a set of interventions to meet the challenges arising from climate change.
Among these interventions are building awareness and empowering small farmers to be able to confront and adapt to climate crises while providing a package of comprehensive services, training agricultural extension workers to be enlightenment leaders in climate change issues, and also promoting the participation of women and youth in development work.
The Ministry of Environment, following the protocol, provides technical support and environmental legislation regulating environmental work in Egypt by the Ministry's experts in all environmental fields. It also implements training programs for cadres and leaders in local communities to prepare trainers and lecturers on ecological issues.
Adding to the above, supporting the Coptic Evangelical Organization with the Ministry's awareness publications, all information, messages, photos, and films related to natural reserves and biodiversity, and working on the Organization's participation in technical programs related to waste recycling and mechanisms for raising its environmental and economic value, and facilitating the involvement of the Coptic Evangelical Organization representatives in the conference activities, the twenty-seventh of the countries party to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which Egypt will host during November 2022 in Sharm El-Sheikh.
